Project EVERSIO was founded in July 2007 by Neville Zammit (Nev) and Michele Magro (Mikk), back when the international scene in eSports was dominated by first person shooter games, and locally, we had strong communities for Call of Duty 2, Counter-Strike: Source and Enemy Territory in particular. Offline events were actually more frequent, and often dominated by names such as Ephica, MEPA, eXosphere, KMA and Xtreme Corpz. EVERSIO was born as an idea to challenge the established teams across the multitude of games played in the local scene, and build a Maltese multi-gaming organisation which also looks beyond our shores for competition. Being the best on a local level wouldn't be enough for someone playing under the EVERSIO banner - they'd also need to be passionate towards the competitive aspect of the particular game to be willing to compete internationally.
At our first offline event, in July 2007, EVERSIO fielded teams for four games: Call of Duty 2, FEAR and Enemy Territory, winning the latter competition, and placing top four in the other two. Since then the organisation grew exponentially to become the most recognised eSport team locally. The defining game for our organisation was undoubtedly Call of Duty 4, winning all local LAN events attended (a total of eleven) over a period of five years. EVERSIO's CoD4 team, headed by then team captain, now Director, Matthew Barbara was also the first Maltese team to travel to an international, high-caliber eSports competition when the team travelled to Roskilde, Denmark to compete at The eXperience 2009. Although the team didn't make it out of the groupstage, they exited the competition with their heads held high after playing against the best CoD4 teams in the world, including Fnatic and H2k (who ended up 1st and 4th respectively). EVERSIO's CoD4 team went on to become a force to be reckoned with in the European CoD4 scene.
This is not to say that squads for other eSport titles fielded by EVERSIO weren't successful. To date, EVERSIO has fielded teams in no less than 14 eSport titles:
- Call of Duty 2;
- Call of Duty 4;
- Counter-Strike: Source;
- Counter-Strike: Global Offensive;
- Overwatch;
- FIFA;
- Trackmania;
- Need for Speed;
- StarCraft 2;
- Command & Conquer 3
- Company of Heroes;
- League of Legends;
- FEAR Combat; and
- Enemy Territory.
Our longterm FIFA player, Christopher Barbara (KrI), racked up seven LAN victories in the different iterations of the football simulator between across 2008 and 2009. Similarly, EVERSIO's FEAR, Trackmania, Command & Conquer 3, League of Legends and Enemy Territory teams all won local championship events. In ten years, we've had 65 players playing for EVERSIO, the vast majority of which are Maltese, with the exception of four players representing four nationalities: Swedish, Norwegian, Romanian and Dutch, all of which were part of our CoD4 squad. In total, EVERSIO players won €7,720 in cash prizes, and significantly more value in hardware prizes.
Over all, Project EVERSIO has racked up a record of 26 local LAN victories across the multiple titles supported, as well as 6 online local cups, and 1 international online cup.
Although we've been quieter over the past few years, in summer of 2016 we started supporting a promising team for the newest Blizzard eSports title, Overwatch. Uniting local veterans from the Call of Duty, Counter-Strike and League of Legends scenes, the team definitely has potential to go the length in both local and international competition, and next weekend, they'll be entering the final stages of the third competition under EVERSIO colours.
This year marks the tenth anniversary of operations for the project. Ten years is a very long time in eSports, and we're very proud to have reached such a milestone. We're also the only local brand in eSports to have withstood this test of time. This milestone has us pondering as to what is next for the following decade, and thus the Project EVERSIO management will be renewing its efforts, investing time and resources into a brand that has become immediately recognisable in local eSports, and which we strongly believe can be an ambassador for Malta in international eSports.
It is in this spirit that we're invigorating the brand with a new logo, and a renewed purpose and commitment. We'll be pushing to increase EVERSIO's presence in other eSports titles, and also with a focus on international competition and content creation.
We'd like to thank the 65 players who have been part of the Project EVERSIO journey so far, and we'd also like to extend our sincere appreciation to the persons who dedicated significant time and energy to the vision and leadership of this project: Anton Xuereb and Chris Haber. Our gratitude is also extended to our former title sponsors Maurizio and Izzy Mamo from Hackers Gaming Centre, and Cleaven Delia from Ultra Computer Store.
Sincerely,
Matthew Barbara
